Perhaps out of sheer coincidence, leaders of different political parties, including fierce rivals, came together under one roof on Saturday evening – a very positive development for the people of Sindh, especially Karachi. The venue was the residence of US Consul General William Martin and the event an iftar dinner, where several politicians and renowned personalities belonging to different sections of the society were invited.
Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Raza Haroon, Awami National Party’s Shahi Syed, Pakistan People’s Party’s Sharjeel Memon and Save Sindh Action Committee’s Syed Jalal Mahmood Shah were seen sitting together on a table. The US consul general himself also accompanied the political leaders on the same table as they chitchatted. It was interesting to see them together, as Shah was the one who announced the strike call on behalf of nationalists and, on his left side, Sindh Information Minister Memon, whose party leader, Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah had complained only two days ago that he was unable to meet with the nationalists.
Accompanying them were leaders from MQM and ANP, which was also important, especially for the people of Karachi. Besides Haroon and Syed, MQM’s Faisal Sabzwari and ANP’s Bashir Jan were also there and also on the same table was Pir Pagaro-led PML-F leader Imtiaz Shaikh.
Not only this, but after breaking the fast, all of them performed the prayers together, led by Jan. Finally, they had dinner together. It was also a coincidence that ANP Sindh President Syed and MQM’s Opposition leader in Sindh Assembly Haroon chose to have rice first.
